It was aggravating, not knowing what was going to happen. So much groundwork had been laid and it was ground that we had never walked on before. What if too many people showed up? What if no one showed up? Setting up for something that was foreign to us was already hard by itself. The possibility of unlimited scenarios didn’t help us feel any better. What were we to do other than wait and hope that everything would be in order? We had a long day ahead of us and the time to prepare was only getting shorter. Our childhood friend named Mario Kart all of a sudden seemed like a neighbor – the kind of neighbor that you hope moves to a different neighborhood.

The first wave of people began to arrive. Why did it seem like there was so much to do? After we had already done so much, the list of tasks seemed to only grow into more tasks. How was setting up for something we had been so excited for turning into a final boss battle with half health? We needed a green 1up and some senzu beans.

As the second wave of people started to show we softly began to speak into the microphone communicating our updates and announcements. It was unlike us. Being “small” was not something that we were used to and the oddest part about it was that we couldn’t figure out where this tiny energy was coming from. Was it from the not knowing? Was it from doubt? Was it from thinking about all of the things that could go wrong?

Just like that, out of nothingness, we had somethingness. The voices on the microphone started speaking and it turned out to be that those voices that were speaking were our own. The energy started to snowball and it just never stopped. Our event was alive and it had no intention on dying out until the last blue shell was thrown  and the last banana peel was slipped on. We ended up having a PERFECT bracket along with a perfect group of participants to help make our Tournament Debut unlike anything we could have ever dreamed. We witnessed the showmanship, the community support, and unbelievable Rankpire energy that could have only been generated in an atmosphere where people were excited to make an infant idea into a solidified reality.
